Daniil Medvedev has admitted that the conditions at the 2024 US Open are ‘tricky’ and he would need to be more cautious amid the shocking toppling of seeds. However, the Russian said that upsets, like the ones of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, didn’t make any difference to him.

Medvedev, seeded fifth, has been in scintillating form at Flushing Meadows so far. He kicked off his run with a win four-set win over Dusan Lajovic and followed it up by taking out Fabian Marozsan in straight sets. In the third round, he ousted 31st seed Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes to reach the second week of the New York Major.

During his post-match interview, Daniil Medvedev was asked if he was aware of the upsets that had taken place in the last couple of nights, alluding to Alcaraz and Djokovic’s second and third-round exits. The World No. 5 said that he was indifferent to them.

He admitted that there was a need to be cautious since the favorites may have a slightly lesser advantage due to the tricky conditions. However, the 28-year-old knew that he could lift the title for the second time if he plays good tennis, whereas bad tennis would lead to his exit.

“Look… I said it before the match that to me upsets don’t really matter,” Medvedev said. “The conditions are a bit tricky. The favorites maybe have less margin against the other guys. Just have to be more cautious. If I play good tennis I can win the whole thing. If I don’t play good I can lose against anyone. I just have to play my best and try to win.”

Daniil Medvedev will take on Nuno Borges in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open, in what will be the third meeting between the two. The Russian leads the head-to-head 2-0. Both their meetings have come in 2024, with the first one coming at the Australian Open and the second one coming in Halle.

The Portuguese has been impressive so far winning against Federico Coria and Thanasi Kokkinakis in the opening two rounds, both in straight sets. He went up against Jakub Mensik next and the two men put on a show with Borges prevailing (5)6-7, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-0, and reaching the final 16 of a Grand Slam for the second time this season.

The winner of their match will play either World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and 14th seed Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.
