The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly trying to sign quarterback Dak Prescott at the last minute, but it’s unclear if they’ve made enough progress.
On Thursday, Prescott said in a news conference that “both sides are working” to reach an agreement before the Cowboys’ season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, per Clarence Hill Jr. of DLLS. Hill also reported that a deal is closer than it has been.
“I’d say they’re working,” Prescott said in a news conference on Thursday, via Hill. “I can’t say, hell, I’ll put a timeline to [vice president of football operations/football administration] Todd [Williams] and [executive vice president] Stephen [Jones] if we don’t get this done, this or that. But I know they’re working.”
It appears tensions between Prescott and the Cowboys have cooled. The 31-year-old passer recently told reporters he doesn’t care whether he signs an extension before the opener. He also said he stopped listening to what owner Jerry Jones tells the media.
Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if Prescott — who’s entering the final year of a four-year, $160M deal — doesn’t sign an extension with the Cowboys.
On a Tuesday episode of the Athletic’s “Scoop City” podcast, Dianna Russini said Prescott wants a multiyear deal, but the Cowboys don’t want to commit to him long term.
Prescott finished second in MVP voting in 2023 behind Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. However, he’s 2-5 in the playoffs and has never led Dallas to an NFC Championship Game, which may explain why the Cowboys aren’t all in on Prescott.
If Prescott and the Cowboys don’t strike a deal before the season opener, expect him to explore free agency in 2025. On a Wednesday episode of “NFL GameDay,” NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport said, “[Prescott] could be the highest-profile free agent in NFL history.”
