The Dallas Cowboys find themselves making headlines for the wrong reasons again as the 2024 season kickoffs. This time it has to do with the cap. Spotrac has revealed that the franchise can enter the season with a $55.1 million cap hit, which would be the largest in NFL history.

Currently, quarterback Dak Prescott is taking up 21.59% of the cap. Prescott is on the final year of his four-year, $160 million contract. Prescott has played eight seasons for the Cowboys. His accolades include Offensive Rookie of the Year, Walter Payton Man of the Year and three Pro Bowl appearances. If any last minute deals on an extension take place, the Cowboys will make history the wrong way.

This season, all 32 teams received an increase of around $30 million which set the new cap space at $255.4 million per team. Cowboys enter 2024 free agency ranked as a bottom 10 team for their inability to make moves. Cowboys had $809,110 in effective cap space and $14,771,496 in dead money.

Although star receiver CeeDee Lamb got his pay day, the odds of Prescott returning are slim.
