BOSTON — Trevor Story is back after missing 133 games.
Doctors believed his shoulder surgery in April would end his season. But he is playing shortstop for the Red Sox on Saturday after his recovery and rehab went much quicker than expected. He will bat seventh in the order.
Boston reinstated Story from the 60-day IL. Rookie catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, clearing a spot on the active roster for Story. Meanwhile, right-handed reliever Isaiah Campbell was placed on the 60-day IL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Story.
Campbell, who made the Opening Day roster, hasn’t pitched since July 13 for Worcester because of right elbow inflammation.
Story dislocated his shoulder and fractured the glenoid rim diving for a ball April 5 in Anaheim. He underwent shoulder surgery, including a labrum repair, April 12 in Los Angeles.
“It’s really exciting. We didn’t think this day would be possible this soon,” Story said. “So it truly is a blessing that I’m even in this situation. It’s a big win for me personally just to come back this year and get some games under my belt. So excited about that and just pumped about joining the team and playing some games that matter.”
He appeared in four rehab games for Worcester, going 6 for 16 (.375 batting average) with a double, two RBIs and three runs.
“I felt good. I felt comfy in the box,” Story said. “I felt like I was controlling the at-bat. That’s kind of what you’re looking for. Yeah, just hitting the ball hard and feeling like I’m taking good swings. Just missed a couple more. So I’m feeling good about it. So just looking to keep that feeling going. Obviously it’s (16) at-bats but I know I can help. So I’m here.”
Gasper went 0 for 12 with three walks and five strikeouts in 10 games.
