Richard Fitts will be called up for Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox, a league source confirmed.
Fitts, who was acquired by the Red Sox in the Alex Verdugo trade last offseason, has a 4.17 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) with Triple A Worcester. He has struck out 111 in 116⅔ innings with 37 walks.
The 24-year-old righthander will likely make his major league debut, as the Sox have pushed Brayan Bello’s scheduled Sunday start to Monday. Cora said following the game that Bello being pushed back a day has little to do with Bello and much to do with Tanner Houck.
“He hasn’t recovered as well [from the last one],” said Cora after the Sox’ 7-5 win Saturday. “He’ll be ready for New York.”
Houck’s last start came Wednesday in the Sox’ series finale against the Mets. The righthander will likely start Friday’s contest against the Yankees.
