The New York Jets almost always manage to have some sort of drama. This season is no different with the antics of QB Aaron Rodgers along with key defensive holdout Haason Reddick.
Now, there is a major update as to the fate of Reddick with the Jets before their Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers. Read below to find out more about where this situation stands.
Robert Saleh Not Expecting Haason Reddick to Play in Week 1
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh does not expect Reddick to play for the Jets in Week 1 against the 49ers. This comes after Reddick has extended his holdout past the end of the preseason. Saleh and Reddick have not been on the same page for most of the offseason, as the two have had minimal contact throughout this holdout.
No Signs of Holdout Ending
Reddick is one of the last key contract holdouts in the NFL. However, his situation is a little different compared to other holdouts this offseason. That is because Reddick did not ask to be on the New York Jets. The Philadelphia Eagles traded Reddick to the Jets earlier this offseason. As a result, Reddick demanded a restructuring of his current contract which has not yet been met.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Reddick is showing no signs of being willing to back down from his position. Russini revealed that Reddick is “willing to die on his sword” to get what he wants out of this holdout. That seems to even include extending this holdout into the regular season.
New York Jets Moving Forward
One can argue that the Jets made a mistake in trading for Reddick in the first place. They may have thought they were getting a key asset to strengthen their defense. However, New York seems to have overlooked team chemistry and willful participation in this department.
Nevertheless, the team has a big Week 1 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers that they need to prepare for. This includes the highly anticipated return of QB Aaron Rodgers, who is facing the man who ended his 2023 season abruptly after just four snaps. We will have to see how the Jets deal with this difficult adversity.
