Novak Djokovic considers copying Federer and Nadal with out-of-character plan

Novak Djokovic is on the cusp of making an unusual change to his traditional plans.

Novak Djokovic appears to have had a change of heart in regards to his scheduling in the off-season.

The Serbian underwhelmed at the US Open earlier this month, and he will now need to wait until next year if he is to move clear of Margaret Court for the most major single titles.

The 37-year-old suffered a shock loss at the hands of Australian 28th seed Alexei Popyrin to put his spot in the ATP Finals at risk, having failed to win any of the four Grand Slam titles this year.

Djokovic has typically rested and regrouped during the off-season to prepare himself for the mental and physical demands of the ATP calendar.

However, reports in Mexico claim that Djokovic has put those plans on the back burner as he is closing in on an exhibition event in the country. An agreement with the organisers is described as ‘close’ to being finalised.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner is reportedly set to compete at the Monumental Plaza de Toros. However, it does not appear that it is solely a trip to Mexico that is on the agenda for Djokovic.

The Serb is said to be considering a tour of Latin America, which would include a clash with Juan Martin del Potro in Argentina. The plans would indicate a major change for Djokovic given that he has traditionally enjoyed a quiet off-season.

Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Roger Federer have all travelled to Mexico for post-season clashes in recent years, and Djokovic looks set to continue that trend if a lucrative agreement can be struck.

Reports claim that Djokovic has been willing to change his typical plans as he is under no pressure to win certain events now that he has an Olympic singles gold medal under his belt following his success in Paris.

After playing just 39 matches this year, Djokovic is set to represent Serbia in the Davis Cup. He will also compete alongside Nadal, Alcaraz, US Open winner Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev in the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia. Djokovic will also be hoping to return to France for the Paris Masters, as well as the ATP Finals, before 2024 is over.
