The Kansas City Chiefs and general manager Brett Veach are busy combing the roster on the night before final roster cuts are due. And while the name of the game is subtraction, Veach made an addition.
On Monday night, the Arizona Cardinals sent linebacker Cam Thomas to Kansas City in exchange for a seventh-round pick.
This is a good indication that the Cardinals had Thomas on their cut list, and the Chiefs didn’t think he’d make it to them on waivers.
Thomas was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of San Diego State, and he appeared in 17 games as a rookie. The following season, the former Aztec made three starts in 15 games.
Over the summer, Thomas was on the Arizona depth chart as a third-string linebacker after recording three sacks in 2022 and none in 2023.
Thomas is still under contract through 2025 and will make $1.17 million this season and $1.6 million next year. He’s a cheap piece to the depth chart puzzle for Veach and the Chiefs.
The Chiefs are preparing to open the regular season against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday Night Football on Sept. 5 in a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship game. The Chiefs were victorious in a defensive game, 17-10.
