The 2024 Laver Cup is set to kick off its 7th edition from September 22 to 24 in Berlin, Germany. This year’s tournament will feature top ATP Tour stars like Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Frances Tiafoe, and Taylor Fritz, drawing tennis fans from around the world.
Team World, led by captain John McEnroe, will chase their third consecutive Laver Cup victory, while Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg, is vying for their fifth title after winning the first four editions consecutively. This year marks the final appearance of Borg and McEnroe as captains, with Yannick Noah and Andre Agassi set to take over from 2025 onwards.
Team Europe
The 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will be the most experienced of Team Europe, marking his return to the Laver Cup for his fourth participation. The last time was in 2022, when he traveled to play a final doubles match with Roger Federer during the Swiss player’s retirement.
He will be accompanied by his compatriot, the 4-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, and fans might see a new partnership between the Spaniards, emulating what they did in the last Olympic Games where they reached the quarterfinals.
The world No. 2 Alexander Zverev will be another big name for Team Europe, in what will be his fifth participation in the tournament, making him the player with the most appearances in the Laver Cup. Another regular for the Europeans is Stefanos Tsitsipas, who will have his fourth appearance, equaling players like Roger Federer, Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, and Jack Sock.
Rounding out the luxurious lineup are the former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev (No. 5) and the 3-time Grand Slam runner-up Casper R
uud (No. 9). With five players in the top 12 and the legendary Rafael Nadal, the Europeans once again emerge as favorites to take the trophy, although this was not enough in the last two editions
Nadal appeared for the last time in the doubles of the 2022 Laver Cup accompanying Federer in his retirement.
Team World
Team World will be led by the recent US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz (No. 7), who is the only top-10 player on the team captained by McEnroe. The American tennis players are experiencing their best moment in the last 20 years, with their four main players in the top 20.
They will also count on Alex De Minaur (No. 11), who is having the best year of his career, having recently entered the top 10 for the first time. The Australian has a great record of 40-13 this season and two titles, and has recorded wins against almost all the players on the rival team, except Alcaraz.
Tommy Paul (No. 13) will play the tournament for the second time, joining the recent US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe (No. 16) and the young star Ben Shelton (No. 17). The Americans have shown their credentials on the Tour over the last two years and for the first time in the Laver Cup, both teams look balanced.
The last member of Team World is the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (No. 21), perhaps the biggest surprise in the lineup. He will be the third South American to participate in the team tournament, following the inclusion of Diego Schwartzman (2018, 2021, 2022) and Francisco Cerundolo (2023).
