EL NUEVO DIARIO, LA ROMANA.- Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz expressed his pride and satisfaction on Wednesday at the presence in the country of Dominican basketball player Al Horford, who arrived on Tuesday with the Boston Celtics NBA championship trophy.
Speaking during a recognition ceremony, the official asked for a standing ovation for Horford and his entire family present at the event.
Cruz was greeted by Al’s father, Tito Horford, and Jose ‘El Grillo’ Vargas, upon his arrival at the Eleoncio Mercedes sports center here.
Minister Cruz and businessman Carlos Soriano presented the Dominican star player with a personalized basketball.
Meanwhile, the Council of Aldermen of the municipality of La Romana recognized him by declaring him a meritorious son, which was read by the councilwoman who received the most votes in the elections in that demarcation, Trina Angomás.
The same recognition was given by the Roman councillors to former NBA player Alfred ‘Tito’ Horford.
In addition, the Punta Cana Group and Central Romana presented plaques of recognition to the NBA star, for being an example for youth and the sport of basketball. The Toros del Este team also recognized him.
Club Deportivo La Tribu de Quisqueya, in collaboration with CAJ Sporting, held a successful basketball clinic, with Al and Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla in attendance.
Al Horford thanked the audience, stressing how important it is for him to collaborate in activities that promote the growth and development of young people in the sports field.
Later, both Horford and Mazzulla, accompanied by a team of local coaches, led a series of practical exercises with more than 60 young people. This sports camp was not only an unforgettable experience for the participants, but also a platform to inspire future generations of Dominican athletes.
Also present were Edwin Encarnación, former Major League baseball player; urban artist Lápiz Consciente; Rafael Uribe from Fedombal; the manager of the basketball team, Néstor-Ché García; Congressman Bolivar Valera “El Boli”; and David Díaz.
