REPORT: Rookie Malik Washington Steals the Show, May Sideline Odell Beckham Jr.’s Dolphins Prospects

Amid an escalating injury crisis affecting the Miami Dolphins’ wide receivers, rookie Malik Washington emerged as a beacon of hope in the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, despite experiencing a brief injury scare himself.

Washington, after making a promising seven-yard reception, took a hefty hit that left him momentarily sidelined, stoking apprehension among spectators. Thankfully, he quickly returned to the field, alleviating fears of another long-term casualty to the team’s roster.

The Dolphins have been plagued with injuries; Erik Ezukanma was seen in a walking boot before the game, Anthony Schwartz exited early with a knee injury, and River Cracraft will be out for an indefinite period. Even star receiver Tyreek Hill is currently hampered by a minor injury.

On top of these concerns, there’s Odell Beckham Jr., whose future impact under Head Coach Mike McDaniel remains uncertain due to his ongoing recovery on the PUP list and a recent history of injuries that have kept him from completing a full season since 2019.

However, Washington’s performance against the Buccaneers showcased his capability and resilience. According to McDaniel, the game seemed to slow down for Washington, who demonstrated exceptional balance, evasion skills, and the ability to continue making plays despite his earlier scare. His multi-dimensional role in the game—which included catching passes, a 40-yard end run, a 45-yard kick return, and a 28-yard punt return—highlighted his versatility.

Tyreek Hill and Terron Armstead’s visit to the medical tent where Washington was briefly treated speaks volumes about the rookie’s standing among his teammates. Washington operated predominantly as a slot receiver—a role that Beckham might frequently occupy—yet Washington’s overall versatility and athletic performance suggest he can offer more in McDaniel’s strategy.

Malik Washington’s potential for significant contributions is notable, especially given the ongoing availability concerns of Beckham and the existing gaps in the lineup due to injuries. Washington’s breakout in the final preseason game not only alleviates some immediate pressures on the Dolphins’ receiving corps but also points to a promising future, positioning him potentially as the team’s next standout star.
