Miami Dolphins Unveil New “F” Position, Shaking Up Their 2024 Offense

The Miami Dolphins unveiled their first depth chart for the 2024 season, revealing a noteworthy tweak in player positioning. Instead of adhering to traditional positional titles, fullback Alec Ingold and tight end Jonnu Smith are designated under a new category labeled “F”. Typically, the designation of positions such as “X”, “Z” for wide receivers and “Y” for tight ends are familiar, but “F” generally represents a more versatile player encompassing various roles.

Coach Mike McDaniel elaborated that the “F” position could encompass a range of responsibilities, from a key receiver on third downs to a primary blocker, or simply a player structured to exploit defensive gaps through dynamic play. Alec Ingold appears as the premier “F” in the depth chart for the upcoming season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Hard Rock Stadium, followed by Jonnu Smith and second-year player Tanner Conner, formerly a college wide receiver now listed as a tight end.

McDaniel further detailed that the “F” would typically align inside the “X” and “Z” receivers and could be positioned adjacent to or away from the “Y” tight end. This strategy allows for a fifth eligible receiver who also holds significant blocking capabilities.

Detailing the individual prowess of Ingold and Smith, it’s noted that Ingold received his first Pro Bowl selection as a fullback last season, while Smith achieved personal bests with 50 receptions and 582 receiving yards with the Atlanta Falcons. Their skills extend beyond catching passes; Smith is also recognized for his pass-blocking contributions, and Ingold is instrumental in creating running paths for teammates Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, aside from his potential role in pass protection.

McDaniel emphasized a key offensive strategy of integrating versatile roles among players to achieve unit coherence and efficiency, highlighting the importance of adaptability in player assignments.

He concluded by simplifying the “F” position as someone distinct from traditional positions like “Y”, “Z”, or “X”, describing them as talented and multifaceted contributors who enhance the overall team dynamics. This repositioning reflects a strategic increment in utilizing player abilities to their optimal potential through versatile field roles.
